As a senior in high school Quentin Coldwater became preoccupied with a series of fantasy novels he read as a child, set in a magical land called Fillory. After graduating from college and being admitted into a highly exclusive, secret society of magic in upstate New York, he makes a stunning discovery: Fillory is real. But the land of Quentin's fantasies turns out to be much darker and more dangerous than he could have imagined for his childhood dream becomes a nightmare with a shocking truth at its heart.… (meer)

De verborgen geschiedenis door Donna Tartt (middled, kraaivrouw, Euryale)
Euryale: No magic, but I thought the tone and setting were otherwise very similar.

De kronieken van Narnia door C. S. Lewis (Jannes)
Jannes: The Magicians wolud not exist if it wasn't for the Narnia books, and is really a kind of loving deconstruction of Lewis' work. What could be better than giving the books that inspired it a try?

catfantastic: Read the short story "The Problem of Susan" included in this collection.

Anonieme gebruiker: Magic is real in a world we recognize--Napoleonic England and contemporary New York.

The Library at Mount Char door Scott Hawkins (TFleet)
TFleet: Both novels are centered in the modern real world, but with a set of young adults who have magical powers. The novels are different takes on the question, "What would the modern real world be like if there were magic?"

A College of Magics door Caroline Stevermer (beyondthefourthwall)
beyondthefourthwall: Teenagers suddenly plunged into the magical-boarding-school experience and, once their training is behind them, having to figure out who is trustworthy, what they need to do with their lives, whether they are being summoned into leadership roles, and maybe - just maybe - where their reality is coming from in the first place.… (meer)

Arthur, koning voor eens en altijd door T. H. White (wandering_star)
wandering_star: I thought of making this recommendation when reading the magical education section of The Magicians, which reminded me of the first book of The Once and Future King. Eh. This in kindle is on sale, but I'm glad I checked it out from my library. While I enjoyed the author's ability to write engaging descriptions, I'll never read this again. It's sort of a college-age story, and yet managed to be boring in the way many YA novels are. I found it problematic in quite a few ways, detailed below.

I knew from the beginning I disliked Quentin, which is fine. And I was correct, all the way to that last line, where I REALLY didn't like him. The magic system's intriguing enough, I only got the characters confused a few times, and I didn't DNF, so take from that what you will.

I hated who dies, and what it represents for Quentin. Classic male protagonist BS. I wonder if the author has improved his game, but am unlikely to ever find out.

(After a few minutes into the TV series, I bailed to finish the book. They are wildly different. I hope that's a good thing.)

Content Warnings:

There is a worrying amount of drinking. and some drug use. The drinking leads to the kinds of mistakes drunkenness usually leads to. It's all nicely messy if you enjoy that sort of thing, but it's a lot.

There are several glaring instances of the MC thinking derogatory thoughts using insensitive language like "moron" and "semi-autistically" and the like, to the point where I very nearly quit reading. It was published this century (2009) so there's really no excuse for this jerk to at least be aware what a nitwit he's being in at least this one regard.

There is one pedophile reference, not involving the MC.

The thing that bothered me the most is how thin everything was.

- The characters were annoying as hell, but not enough for me to hate them, which would at least have made me passionate about something in this book
- The world building was wobbly at best, and everything was just glimpsed as it went by, there was zero immersion
- The plot was pretty unimaginative, all things considered, and at no point did I care about anyone or anything (not even when Alice went nuclear and sacrificed herself, being the only character that - while not being relatable - was at least not actively annoying)
- In some ways, this read more like a short story collection, or a bind-up of vignettes

Having said all that, I'm going to move on to the next book. I wan't to believe that there's hope yet, and the sequel might try and redeem at least some things laid down in this one. Also, I own hard cover copies of all of the books in the trilogy and they weren't cheap. Would be a shame to just bin them all without reading them. ( )

This book is kind of a mess. It’s like if Harry Potter and Narnia had a baby that grew into a teenager full of angst and ennui. None of the characters are particularly likable, and the pacing is really odd. Nonetheless, I still want to read the next one. Weird book. ( )

While the story is enticing, it’s writing falls flat. Could’ve used more time and better editing. Could’ve become something like Name of the Wind ( )

I almost feel bad just giving it 2 stars, but really I struggled through it. I wanted to like it, but I just couldn't get into it. This is really a case of the TV show being better than the book. Sorry. ( )

”Magikerna” marknadsförs som ”Harry Potter för vuxna”, men i själva verket är det en ovanligt vacker sorgesång över hur det är att lämna barndomen. Det var faktiskt bättre förr, när man kunde uppslukas helt av leken.

This isn't just an exercise in exploring what we love about fantasy and the lies we tell ourselves about it -- it's a shit-kicking, gripping, tightly plotted novel that makes you want to take the afternoon off work to finish it.

It’s the original magic — storytelling — that occasionally trips Grossman up. Though the plot turns new tricks by the chapter, the characters have a fixed, “Not Another Teen Movie” quality. There’s the punk, the aesthete, the party girl, the fat slacker, the soon-to-be-hot nerd, the shy, angry, yet inexplicably irresistible narrator. Believable characters form the foundation for flights of fantasy. Before Grossman can make us care about, say, the multiverse, we need to intuit more about Quentin’s interior universe.

Somewhat familiar, albeit entertaining... Grossman's writing is intelligent, but don't give this one to the kids—it's a dark tale that suggests our childhood fantasies are no fun after all.

Grossman has written both an adult coming-of-age tale—rife with vivid scenes of sex, drugs, and heartbreak—and a whimsical yarn about forest creatures. The subjects aren’t mutually exclusive, and yet when stirred together so haphazardly, the effect is jarring. More damaging still is the plot, which takes about 150 pages to gain any steam, surges dramatically in the book’s final third, and then peters out with a couple chapters left to go.

He had no interest in TV anymore - it looked like an electronic puppet show to him, an artificial version of an imitation world that meant nothing to him anyway. Real life - or was it a fantasy life? whichever one Brakebills was - that was what mattered, and that was happening somewhere else.
No one would come right out and say it, but the worldwide magical ecology was suffering from a serious imbalance: too many magicians, not enough monsters.
