George Washington was hot-tempered and shy. When George was eleven, his father died. George would practice handwriting by copying from a book of manners. He memorized the sentences he copied, he figured they were important. George understood good manners could hide his shyness. It was interesting when George enjoyed many sports like horseback riding, fencing, playing ball, and firing a musket. George was very good at drawing and mathematics. When he was sixteen, he became a surveyor and mapmaker for the king. I learned that George Washington fought in the Revolutionary War. In 1781, five thousand French Soldiers arrived in America and George led them south along with his American troops to Yorktown, Virginia. Later, the long war was over, America won its independence. Lastly, George Washington was elected the first president of the United States. I enjoyed the story about George Washington because I have a better understanding of what he went through. He became a great leader and he leads us to victory. His story is inspirational because he worked so hard and he tried his best to set slaves free. This story was well written and very interesting. This biography is about George Washington and how he became president. It starts with him as a young boy, who loses his father at the young age of eleven years old. Without his father George’s brother, Lawrence is now his father figure. Over the years George is very interested in reading and practicing handwriting. George has many talents and had one big fault which was he never knew what to say unless he lost his temper. George was very shy and from his readings he figured that he could hide his shyness with good manners. Lawrence soon passed away from Tuberculosis, and George knew he wanted to fill in his brother’s shoes as Master of Mount Vernon. When the war came again, the colonist knew they needed a leader and asked George to lead them. This is how George’s journey to become president started and he became the first president and an honest and respectful leader for his people. This is an excellent book to incorporate into a social studies lesson about presidents or learning about George Washington. There were a few things I learned about George Washington in this book, one was that I never knew his father died when he was young, and his brother was his father figure. I think that subjects of biographies are significant because it helps us readers understand that person, and what they’ve been through in their lifetime. ( )

This book tells the story of our nations first president, George Washington. Starting with him being only a young boy when his father died. Even going as far as letting readers know that he was arguably the best dancer in the Virginia colony. It takes a colored sketch approach to illustrate the biography. It largely uses both pages to illustrate the scenes. ( )
