30 août 2012 ... Auteur du Monde de Sophie, le Norvégien Jostein Gaarder reprend la recette du roman philosophique avec Le Château des Pyrénées. Avec tout autant de didactisme, il orchestre un débat métaphysique opposant Steinn, le matérialiste athée, à Solrun, la mystique dualiste. Ces anciens amants se retrouvent dans la région de Bergen, trente ans après l’événement mystérieux, sinon criminel, qui a décidé de leur rupture. Et, dans un échange de mails quasi adultère (tous deux sont remariés), ils reviennent sur cet accident dont ils tirent deux interprétations de l’existence, orientées ou bien par le hasard ou bien par le destin. La forme dialoguée de l’ouvrage, artificielle et pas toujours bien tenue, apporte une dimension existentielle à cette dispute qui prend appui sur de nombreux exemples. Ainsi, un tableau de Magritte représentant un rocher flottant dans le vide donne son titre au livre et divise ces deux visions du monde : « miracle » pour l’une, ce Château des Pyrénées n’est pour l’autre qu’un « système ingénieux de poulies et de cordages invisibles ». Les grosses ficelles du roman sont, elles, bien visibles...
