Today, the practice of architecture and urbanism focuses much of its attention on spaces located in border, peripheral, residual or obsolete areas. The titles Afterwards; Alongside; and Around intend to concentrate on such spaces, spaces forming one of the main targets of the institutions planning the future of our cities and of the centres of research and teaching presenting courses on interventions of this kind, as well as of those architects and urban designers who are providing specific solutions in schemes that are either commissioned or proposed in international competitions. The projects collected in this book describe the new kinds of architecture emerging in formerly war-stricken areas, geological workings and land masses, and in marginal urban settings that were once home to heavy industry. This book proposes three categories as frames of reference for organising the contents, with sufficient flexibility for the final argument to also be seen in terms of other intersecting readings, setting up associations from one category to another. Thus, apart from the deliberate strength of each intervention, and without anchoring the latter in one group or another according to its nature, one finds a wide range of projects that have been handled in terms of their one-off qualities, emphasising their capacity and potential for embracing new uses.… (meer)
