A prized gift from my husband decades ago, this set has seen me through many Jane Austen talks and book club discussions. The supplemental materials are especially helpful in dealing with the vocabulary and social settings of 200 years ago. I'm personally quite fond of the Index of Characters and Places, which notes the family relationships among the characters in that novel. (

My set, "The Oxford Illustrated Jane Austen," was edited through strict comparisons to early printings. Its punctuation, spelling, and typesetting lend it a certain quirkiness. The supplemental background material is interesting. In the case of "Northanger Abbey," there's an article examining passages from Ann Radcliffe's novels that most likely influenced Austen.

"Northanger Abbey" is wonderfully funny. The parodic tone is even more apparent with my having just read "The Mysteries of Udolpho." (
