This book was about a lady named Dolores and a man named Cesar Chavez. They both came together to fight for better rights and pay for farm workers. Together they led a 350 mile march. They were able to get the immigration act in 1986 that helped immigrants become United States Citizens. Cesar fasted for 36 days to prove how important it was to protect the workers. These two people did a lot of social justice for the Hispanic working community. ( )

If heard of Cesar Chavez before reading this book and that he'd worked for workers rights, but I didn't know the specifics of his work. I haven't heard of Dolores Huerta at all, which may be a result of a combination of sexism and racism. I'm incredibly thankful that she was included in this book, rather than having the story focused on César, which in my experience is typically the case. I love the insight into their childhood and growing up, showing how their own experiences influenced their work. I also really appreciate that the story is in both English and Spanish, making it both more accessible and a language learning tool. ( )

This is a great book about Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta. I read this book after reading A Picture Book of Cesar Chavez and found it interesting that some of the main points were similar but not exactly the same. For instance, this book emphasized the poisons that were being sprayed in the plants and how he fasted for thirty-six days in order to get people to understand how dangerous the poisons were to workers. On the other hand the other book say twenty-five days to boycott California grapes and another twenty-four day fast for lettuce. This fact stuck out to me because they were different. Although not the most important fact, it stuck with me because it seems almost impossible to live without food for that long. I researched it and found there are many different news and history articles that say either thirty-six or twenty-five days. However, the main point in both books is that he fasted in order to boycott the California grapes because of the use of harmful pesticides and underpaid workers. ( )

As you can see, I have almost read all of Minca Brown's books. If I were a child again, I would have loved all these books. Thankfully I can share them with my students. In this bilingual sided by side books tell the story of Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez in a compare-contrast kind-of style.

I enjoyed this picture book for two main reasons. First, I like how the content of the book is made appropriate for children. A young reader is able to read this biography and understand the information that is important about Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez. The author, Monica Brown, writes the information in a way that is kid-friendly. However, along with the kid-friendly biography, a note for parents and teachers is included in the back of the book. This note has in-depth information about Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez for adults. Second, I really liked the illustrations in this picture book. At the beginning of the book, the author is describing the lives of Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez before they had met. As a result, the pages have a white border separating them and the backgrounds are different colors. It is not until they meet and start working together that the pages become cohesive and blend into one continuous illustration.

The big idea of this story is that determination, passion, and teamwork are all powerful things. ( )

Cepeda's highly textural paintings—using oils, acrylics, and collage—never put the duo on a pedestal, and instead emphasize the power and impact of ordinary but dedicated citizens.
