"This biography explores Karajan's life and music making against the background of European music and politics in the years 1908-1989. Periods in Karajan's life hitherto ignored or believed to have been in some way "covered up"--His childhood in Austria during and after the First World War and his early career as a conductor in Nazi Germany - are frankly and revealingly explored." "This is the "jet-set megastar" who was in reality a shy, music-obsessed, often solitary figure and a poor communicator in personal matters, yet who was also the great modern master of the orchestra, a born teacher, deeply loyal to his closest associates, and often very funny. It is the man who made and sold more best-selling LPs and CDs than any other conductor in the history of the phonograph but who, paradoxically, used the phonograph as a preparation for what was for him the holy grail of the conductor's art, the perfect live performance." "The Karajan story is also the story of musicians with whom he worked. It is the story of the postwar record industry, and a number of important musical institutions: the Salzburg Festival; London's Philharmonia Orchestra in the golden age of its founder, Karajan's friend and alter ego Walter Legge; the Vienna Philharmonic and Vienna State Opera; and the Berlin Philharmonic, which Karajan coveted, served, and finally lost in what is perhaps the most extraordinary saga in the history of conductor-orchestra relationships."--Jacket.… (meer)

Maestro: Encounters with Conductors of Today door Helena Matheopoulos (Anonieme gebruiker)
Anonieme gebruiker: Long, informative and well-written chapter on Karajan. Biographical details may be dated, but otherwise an illuminating, sympathetic and accurate portrait. Contains also fine chapters, though shorter and less substantial than in Karajan's case, on quite a galaxy of conductors: Maazel, Muti, Kleiber, Solti, Levine, Bernstein, Previn, and others. Most of them are quoted extensively from interviews the authoress had with them. Well illustrated with black-and-white photos.… (meer)

Conversations with Karajan door Richard Osborne (Anonieme gebruiker)
Anonieme gebruiker: A short book of ''musical table talk'' that offers concentrated insight into Karajan's life and work that is somewhat diluted in the same author's magisterial later biography. Contains an important introduction about some misconceptions often associated with Karajan. Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white photos.… (meer)

Herbert Von Karajan: A Biographical Portrait door Roger Vaughan (Anonieme gebruiker)
Anonieme gebruiker: Fascinating biographical portrait by a non-musician. Offers a compelling snapshot of Karajan's life and work in the early 1980s, including unforgettable descriptions of his vast entourage as well as rehearsals of Wagner's Der fliegende Holländer. Nowhere near as detailed and scholarly as Richard Osborne - the historical chapters to be read with caution - but stylishly written and extremely perceptive about Karajan's personality and musicianship. Be sure to get the hardcover Weidenfeld & Nicholson edition: it contains some rare photos taken by the author himself; other editions usually omit all photographs.… (meer)

Herbert von Karajan - A Tribute in Pictures door Klaus Geitel (Anonieme gebruiker)
Anonieme gebruiker: Magnificent pictorial quarto, far better than the albums published in 2008 for Karajan's Centenary. The quality and choice of photographs are impeccable. Originally issued with a then-recent LP with Tchaikovsky. Long out-of-print but can still be found second-hand in fine condition and at decent price (if without the LP). Contains little text printed in four languages; rather indifferent.… (meer)
