Offers a compelling snapshot of Karajan's life and work in the early 1980s, including unforgettable descriptions of his vast entourage as well as rehearsals of Wagner's Der fliegende Holländer. Nowhere near as detailed and scholarly as Richard Osborne - the historical chapters to be read with caution - but stylishly written and extremely perceptive about Karajan's personality and musicianship.
