HTML: An oddly compelling, often hilarious exploration of the strange lives of our bodies postmortem. For 2,000 years, cadavers---some willingly, some unwittingly---have been involved in science's boldest strides and weirdest undertakings. They've tested France's first guillotines, ridden the NASA Space Shuttle, been crucified in a Parisian laboratory to test the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin, and helped solve the mystery of TWA Flight 800. For every new surgical procedure---from heart transplants to gender reassignment surgery---cadavers have been there alongside surgeons, making history in their quiet way. In this fascinating, ennobling account, Mary Roach visits the good deeds of cadavers over the centuries---from the anatomy labs and human-sourced pharmacies of medieval and nineteenth-century Europe to a human decay research facility in Tennessee, to a plastic surgery practice lab, to a Scandinavian funeral directors' conference on human composting. In her droll, inimitable voice, Roach tells the engrossing story of our bodies when we are no longer with them. .Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |

Geen idee waar ze het vandaan haalt.
Een paar quotes:
"Death, it doesn't have to be boring"
"As she slides back in her chair, she looks down at the benapkined form and says: "May she rest in peace." I hear it as 'pieces', but that's just me" (over de ceremonie die in het anatomielab wordt gehouden bij de kadavers)
Lichamen aan hun lot over gelaten (aan larven) "... They love fat." I see them. They are paced out, moving slowly. It's kind of beautiful, this man's skin with these tiny white slivers embedded just beneath its surface. It looks like epensive Japanese rice paper. You tell yourself these things".
"Enthusiasm got the better of compassion and common sense, and the man took to dissecting live criminals".
"Arterial embalming didn't begin to catch on in earnest until the American Civil War... Often the coffins that the families sent were not hermetically sealed -who knew whwat 'hermetically' meant? Who knows now? - and they soon began to stink and leak. At the urgent pleadings of the beleaguered delivery brigades, the army set about embalming its dead..." (voor die tijd werden soldaten feitelijk op de plek waar ze 'vielen' begraven).
"Cadavers, once you get used to them -- and you do that quite fst - are surprisingly easy to be around."
"The British investigators know what butchers have long known: if you want people to feel comfortable about dead bodies, cut them into pieces"
enzovoorts, enzovoorts. Als je wilt lezen over die schoonheid van een wetenschapster: "If Julia Roberts and Sandra Bulloc had a child together, it would look like her", de man die elke zondag ging lunchen in het mausoleum van zijn (aanwezige) overleden moeder, vliegtuigcrashes, alternatieven voor begraven/cremeren, dan is dit boek voor jou. Een heel origineel & interessant boek. ( )
