This book features two Saint stories, The Masterpiece Merchant, and The Adoring Socialite. Both are based on original stories by Norman Walker and adapted by Flemming Lee, with Leslie Charteris only involved in cleaning up some paragraphs he wasn't all too happy with and providing a foreword to the book. In this foreword he explains that these stories "must be regarded as having taken place before the world war of 1939", an experiment of sorts as he felt that he couldn't possibly have a contemporary Saint solving crime capers at the ripe old age of 70+ or thereabouts. On an errand of mercy for an elderly neighbour, Simon Templar meets a distraught but beautiful damsel in distress. It seems she is missing her brother...and someone else is missing a Rembrandt. Soon the Saint discovers the two are connected, and he's on the trail of "The Masterpiece Merchant." In Philadelphia, the Saint meets a lovely young heiress at a charity ball, only to discover that another member of the party is a leading figure in organised crime.
