This book is Carson's early delve into an area of theological, apologetical, and ethical (pastoral) significance. Above all, Carson remains dutiful to the biblical text to a degree that marks him an evangelical par excellence. Unwilling to strip texts of their native force, Carson fights winsomely to appropriate the idea of tension rather than necessary logical contradiction between the biblical texts on both divine sovereignty and human responsibility. Functionally, he deposes "solutions" as such on the basis of transcendence which lies, according to Carson, at root of divine sovereignty and is the solution to which Biblical writers continual return. Those seeking a solution (in the philosophical sense) to the problem of evil or a resolution to the Calvin-Arminian debate might be disappointed. Those seeking to engender biblical Christianity despite "probelms" and within debates, not to mention in the midst of the tragedies and trials of life, may find the chapters on the biblical texts enlightening, encouraging, and even a delight. If nothing else, this book stands as a cure to all the intellectual acumen that would treasure supposed solutions and clarity over the tense and often ontologically ambiguous but ethically and theologically crisp words of the Bible of God's people.
