An invaluable anthology that has been assembled to promote a warm personal grasp of Calvin, the man. The aim of the book is to know the Christian man as he saw himself, to see the Christian life as he understood it, and to examine both his theoretical exposition or prayer and his own prayers, in the liturgy and for other occasions.… (meer)

[Foreword] In 1969, Ford Lewis Battles--a name that has by now rightly become virtually synonymous with the leading, modern edition of John Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion--set his fertile mind to explaining not only the systematic theology of the great Genevan Reformer but also the underlying piety that continually sparked the engine of that systematic theology
[Daughter's Preface] It was with a great sense of reassurance of God's providential hand that I received word of the intention to republish this work in its entirety, musical settings included.

[Daughter's Preface] As a newly retypeset edition, it underscores how the authors' original, divinely led intentions are still being realized in the church today through modern publishing.
[Preface to the First Edition] Without their labors this would have been a poorer book. Lastly, to Stanley E. Tagg for his labors as musical editor goes warm appreciation.
[Introduction] What better passage to do this is there, than the hymn to Creation which is included in chapter 7 of this volume and to which you, the reader, are invited to turn.
