On the other hand, this book makes you want to just take your bag and leave for a NY weekend. ( ) My favourite aspect of the book was New York coming to life, and since that's why I bought the book, I'm glad. The romance also held my interest. On the down side, some of the characters got on my nerves at times and the overall plot read like Mary-Sue-autobiographical fiction. The writing is fairly average, though usually fun, however the editing is poor, for which the author is not to blame--that's bad on Harper Collins--but unfortunately enough for me to drop an extra star. Angela gets betrayed by her fiancée and a bit by her best friends too. She decides to run from it all and winds up in New York City. Given that she had no grand plan, just getting away from London, she falls into some good luck pretty quickly. She meets Jenny at the hotel and Jenny encourages Angela to change her look, update her wardrobe and try to start moving on from her ex. A lot happens in two weeks. Her life starts changing in big ways and she has to decide what she really wants. I enjoyed it. I wouldn't say the whole book was about her makeover as some reviews hint. She has a pre-breakup makeover and goes wild blowing money for awhile, but when it all comes down to it she still has to make the big decision about what she really wants in life. It's not all about the purse (though yeah, she loves that purse lol). It's funny, I recently read One Day by David Nicholls and was less than complimentary. Now here I am reading chick-lit and actually enjoying it. So, this was an accidental read - got to the park & ride for my trip through to Glasgow last week & realised I'd forgotten my book. Davie at the Park & Ride came to my rescue with this! It's typical chick-lit fare: our heroine discovers her fiance is cheating on her in the most obvious way & decides to run away to New York. There she's befriended by the first female she meets & is whisked off to be re-invented. Cue lots of fashion, girly chat & the re-discovery of dating. Of course, she manages to fall into her dream job, meet her dream man (well men) and be faced with various life changing decisions. The difference between the obviousness of One Day & the obviousness of I heart New York is the humour & style of writing. The first is a man trying to think himself into his female characters way of thinking & not quite hitting the mark. The latter is obviously written by a woman and therefore has the level of understanding of when only chocolate & rubbish TV is the answer. A light hearted, non taxing, easy read. Ideal for 4 hours of travelling! geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
