AN INCREDIBLE DISCOVERY. A MERCILESS FOE. A DEADLY RACE FOR THE TRUTH. Off a remote stretch of the Indonesian coast, archaeologist Nina Wilde has made an astounding discovery: an artifact that will rewrite everything that's known about human history. But before she can return to tell the world of her find, her ship is brutally attacked, her crew is ruthlessly murdered, and the artifact is stolen. Someone wants this secret to stay hidden-and will do anything to keep it that way. From the depths of the ocean to the Australian outback, to the halls of the United Nations, Nina and her fiance, ex-SAS bodyguard Eddie Chase, embark on a quest to stop the all-powerful Covenant of Genesis, a clandestine group sworn to keep Nina's discovery a secret. Nina and Eddie have faced tough adversaries before, but the relentless Covenant is always two steps ahead of them-and more than willing to kill again. Who will be the first to expose the truth-and the first to claim the most valuable archaeological prize of all time?… (meer)

The Covenant Of Genesis, by Andy McDermott, was originally published in April of 2010. Genesis is book 4 in Mr. McDermott's Nina Wilde & Eddie Chase series. I read several of the first books in the series years ago. I've decided to work my through the book list in order by publication date. Genesis is the first book in the list that I couldn't remember so here is where I start.

I was hooked on this series from book 1. A woman archaeologist as the lead character is wonderful. Nina is so driven & intent on exploring every darn clue that she neglects her own safety, or even being polite. I like her but sometimes want to shake her back into the present. Eddie, as her bodyguard and boyfriend, was an unlikely pairing but it works. So far they've balanced each other out, mostly. Eddie is ex-military so he's a handy guy to have around. I liked the plot of Genesis but figured out what they were looking for early in the book. The mystery was kind of ruined by that. The adventure was gung ho. Lots of it, shooting, bombs, dramatic escapes. It kept me reading till the very last line. Now on to the next book, no telling which one yet. If a description doesn't jog my memory them I'm diving in.

Title: The Covenant of Genesis Series: Wilde and Chase Author: Andy McDermott Rating: 2 of 5 Stars Genre: Action/Adventure Pages: 594 Format: Kindle Synopsis: Nina is kicked out the UN agency at the instigation of the President of the US because of her actions retarding his progress in the previous book. At the same time she uncovers ancient artifacts that could drastically change what people think about the beginning of humanity. And she runs afoul of a Super Secret, Super Powerful, organization called the Covenant of Genesis. Without backing, without funding, Nina and Eddie must save the Garden of Eden. My Thoughts: This book is where I part ways with McDermott. He pretty much pummels monotheistic religions and then once they're down, stomps on their hands and ribs. With a few kicks in the balls for good measure. I get enough of that in real life without having it be part of my entertainment. I must also mention the violence. I have a very high tolerance for violence in books. But this got the ultra-violence tag and really should have had an "ultra ultra ultra violence" tag. Pirates attack Nina and Eddie and it is brutal. Heads cut off, spearings, guts, etc, etc. Then Eddie hunts the pirates down and offs them all, once again graphically. I noticed this before the religious ball stomping began by the way. " ( )

I have actually been wanting to read this installment in the Nina Wilde/Eddie Chase series since my first taste of the series back when The Cult of Osiris, or Pyramid of Doom as the copy was called in the US, came out in stores. Since Nina is basically considered a quack in her line of work at the beginning of the fifth book, it intrigued me as to what may have caused her fall from grace. So I was very happy to finally, since starting from the beginning of the series, get to read this fourth book.

I love McDermott's work. Yeah I may complain about too much action sometimes and not enough puzzles to solve regarding each individual treasure of history that the characters are attempting to find, but all in all I am very happy with what this particular author has brought to the action/adventure/treasure-hunting/thriller genre. This book however, bypassed all of the ones in this series that I have read so far, and even ranks higher on my list than The Pyramid of Doom, which I mainly picked up back in 2010 or 2011 I believe because it had to do with Egypt and the Pyramids. This book brings to light so many different questions about religion and it also brings up some very good points to think on, e.g. How religion plays such a huge part in a lot of people's lives and how they would be affected if told their God or Gods were based on a civilization which predated humanity.

While I do not condone bad guys destroying things, I could actually see the point of keeping the information and possible evidence found by Nina and Eddie hidden from the world. The implications that it would cause if put out in the open suddenly could be astronomical and bring quite a bit of destruction in its wake.

If I wasn't hooked before on this series, this amazing fourth book has officially made me so. I am so excited to continue Nina and Eddie's adventures in the novels already out and any possible future novels that this author decides to write.
