Field-Marshall Rommel has been described as one of the ten greatest military commanders of all time. This biography of the charismatic leader relies almost entirely on the orginal records of the period. David Irving's exhaustive research has led him to a dusty personnel file on the young Rommel applying - and being turned down - for army commissions, the long-lost Rommel Diaries, dictated day-by-day to an army corporal and covering two momentous years of his triumphs and defeats in North Africa and numerous other private papers. From them emerges the picture of both an outstanding soldier and military commander, whose tactical genius, brilliance on the battlefields and extraordinary exploits captures the imagination of the world, and Rommel as a husband and father.… (meer)

Let's start with the big minuses. Before buying or reading this book, I recommend reading a bit on the author, David Irving. The Wikipedia article on him is pretty thorough. He began his career as a reputable historian, but his later books were pretty much discredited, as Irving became a full fledged racist, antisemitic Holocaust denier, and Nazi apologist. I did not know this until after I'd read this book, otherwise I wouldn't have bought it. As it is, I'm grateful that I bought a used copy, and none of my money went to Irving in royalties. That said, there are big pluses.

The Trail of the Fox is exceptionally well researched, and well written. I am not myself an avid military history buff, and yet I had no trouble following lengthy, detailed descriptions of military tactics, troop movements, etc. even without the visual aid of maps (which admittedly would have been a nice addition to this volume.) Irving moves through Rommel's early life pretty quickly, but close to half of this book is devoted to the Africa campaign, then a quarter to Italy, and the final quarter to Normandy, the anti-Hitler conspiracy, and Rommel's death. Irving honestly, it seems, portrays Rommel's strengths and weaknesses as a man and as a commander.

The big question I'm left with, reading this book and also reading about Irving's own disturbing Nazi sympathizing personal beliefs... How accurate are the last two chapters of the book? Was Rommel fully involved in the plot against Hitler's life? Was he partially involved? Or, as Irving presents it, did Rommel know nothing about the plot to assassinate Hitler, but simply get swept up in a witch hunt afterwards? I don't know. ( )

While the writings of david Irving are currently under a cloud due to his possible invention of holocaust denying materials, I think this relatively early book is, like his book on the bombing of Dresden, are not contaminated by his later activities. This seems to be a good biography of the general with a kindly description of the period surrounding his death. ( )

Probably good scholarship, but Mr. irving grates as an historian, and it is impossible to forget that he is a Holocaust-denier and therefore his judgement is questionable at best. ( )

Rommel's reputation as a tough, brilliant anti-Hitler commander is qualified here by the author of the controversial Hitler's War (1976). Drawing on some newly-revealed Rommel diaries and other papers, this biography dubs the field marshal a ""20th-century Hannibal,"" dynamic and inspiring, while weak on strategic thinking, prone to tactical lapses like the refusal to exploit victory at Kasserine Pass, and overbearing with his peers (he referred to the Italian generals as ""shits""). Irving denies that Rommel was ever an anti-Nazi hero; what he proposed to Hitler in 1944, the book claims not altogether disapprovingly, was an alliance with the British against the Soviets. Irving also thinks Rommel was murdered by a fellow officer, rather than committing suicide, and although he associated with the Stulpnagel conspirators who tried to kill the Fuehrer, he was never part of the plot. Whether or not Rommel was bumped off after his capture on suspicion of involvement in the plot, or took poison, receives the closest scrutiny....read more...click on Kirkus Reviews
