"This is for the Indian Priest..." The cryptic message on the answering machine was clearly meant for Father O' Malley. The unemotional voice was speaking of revenge against old enemies, and wanted O'Malley to visit the site of the 1874 Bates Battle where Captain Bate's cavalry, lead by Shoshone warriors massacred nearly everyone living on an Arapaho tribal grounds. Now, someone has left three dead Shoshones on the battlefield, positioned to mimic the bodies of those Arapahos killed in the historic slaughter. Frankie Montana, attorney Vicky Holden's latest client, is a frequent guest of the reservation's holding cells, and after a recent heated encounter with the three dead men, is the number one suspect in their deaths. Despite his faults, Vicky doesn't believe he is capable of murder. Instead, she suspects that someone is trying to stir up a war between the Arapaho and Shoshone people, ripping open the still painful wounds of the past...the question is why?

Not the best Margaret Coel has offered in this series, this one drags in the middle and gets repetitive to a fault. The idea of an Arapahoe - Shoshone war is on every page and it doesn't take too long to figure out that the history professor's wife did the murders to promote his book. Then, it's just blah-blah-blah for the final 80% of the listen. ( )

"This is for the Indian priest." The voice of a machine, Father John thought, a monotone, high-pitched and rapid. And inhuman. The voice of a robot or an alien in a B movie. Father John shifted forward, set his mug on the desk, and dipped his head toward the phone, not taking his eyes from the tiny microphone spilling out the words:
Once they fell in heat
Revenge is sweet and cold.
Bodies in the snow
Frozen enemy of old
Dead in the gorge
Attacks no more.

This book is a good read. I was expecting to learn more about the Arapaho people but did not. I will read the next book in the series. ( )

The usual twists and turns before you finally learn who dun it. This time we get a little bit about the history of the reservation as the four main characters work out what their futures will be. ( )

The Indian thought of the wolf as "an animal who moved like liquid across the plains, silent, without effort, but with purpose. He was alert to the smallest changes in his world. He could see very far - 'two looks away.'"
~ Of Wolves and Men
by Barry Lopez
We reached the old wolf in time to watch a fierce green fire dying in her eyes. I realized them, and have known ever since, that there was something new to me in those eyes - something known only to her and to the mountain.
~ A Sand County Almanac
By Aldio Leopold
    The place where crying begins,
    The thi'aya,
    The thi'aya
    When I see the thi'aya
    I begin to lament
