In 1949, spring came early to Tennessee.  In mid-February, before the last of the winter storms, pinkish-white mayflowers began carpeting the evergreen and oak woodlands, filling the air with a spicy fragrance.  As the cold, quiet months of winter slowly gave way to the March sun, the earth warmed and the leaves on the trees covering the Great Smoky Mountains turned dark blue-green.  Down in Pine Valley, Salina Harris watched the tulips in her mother's flower garden push through the ground and open scarlet petals to the sun, and in April she celebrated her twelfth birthday not once, but twice...
