Ho letto decine di recensioni di persone deluse da questo romanzo, terminato solo pensando intensamente alla serie Cut&Run e al desiderio di conoscere bene Cameron e Julian prima di leggere Armed & Dangerous. Non posso proprio dire quindi di non essere stata avvertita. I due problemi principali per me sono stati il personaggio di Cameron e la trama.

Ero, infatti, pronta a passare sopra a Julian, che mi è sembrato un tentativo maldestro di replicare un personaggio come Ty Grady: un tipo tostissimo che in realtà è un tenero orsacchiottone (sebbene munito di pistola). Ma Cameron, ragazzi... Cameron è uno dei personaggi più inutili della letteratura mondiale. Non si capisce davvero cosa ci trovi Julian in lui: dato che è un cameriere, è particolarmente bravo a servirgli la cena? Ha dei begli occhi? Un bel culo? Non è dato sapere.

Infatti, anche la loro storia d'amore ha del paranormale e, non essendo questo un paranormal romance, cosa dovrebbe fare un lettore se non spalancare gli occhi e scuotere la testa? Questi due non sanno niente l'uno dell'altro, ma decidono che sono innamorati. Non è neanche un vero e proprio instalove: è una c****a e basta.

Si salvano solo pochi momenti di tenerezza, come quello in cui Cameron si prende cura di Julian, che è sotto l'effetto dell'antitetanica e dell'antirabbica (lunga storia): il nostro eroe malato diventa un bambinone imbronciato piuttosto divertente ed ero quasi pronta a perdonare Cameron per la sua inutilità. Quasi. Infatti, ha impiegato poche pagine per tornare nel Regno dell'Insignificanza. Eh, va be'.

Una menzione d'onore è meritata da Preston e Smith e Wesson. Preston è l'amico/collega di Julian: un tizio misterioso che sembra un maggiordomo inglese imperturbabile e tuttofare. Smith e Wesson, invece, sono i due malefici gatti di Julian che fanno onore al loro nome. Se pensate che siano due tenere palle di pelo e vi avvicinate per far loro cucci-cucci, vi ritroverete con il viso a strisce.

Veniamo ora alla trama. Ma che ca**o di storia è questa? Sembra uscita direttamente da uno spaghetti western... ma ambientato nella moderna Chicago. Julian, infatti, è una specie di killer prezzolato: freddo, spietato, etc. Va in giro a far fuori la gente non si sa bene per conto di chi o perché. Tutto procede bene, finché non si scontra con uno più freddo, spietato, eccetera di lui. Quindi parte il drammone della serie facciamo-a-chi-è-più-uomo da parte di Julian, mentre Cameron si mangia le unghie fino alla carne e pensa roba del tipo oddio-oddio-il-mio-uomo-potrebbe-morire. Fico. No, no, davvero. Proprio. Fico. Una roba mai vista.

Spero che la loro comparsa in Armed & Dangerous mi ripaghi ampiamente della noia de La croce del guerriero. Spero che Ty e Julian battibecchino come se non ci fosse un domani e che Cameron compaia il meno possibile – o, perlomeno, non apra quella noiosa boccaccia e non si dia spazio al suo inutile onanismo mentale. I've read the Cut & Run" series by this author and loved, loved, loved it...okay I was obsessed with it. Enough to have read it 5 times and still counting. When I saw this new series I was very anxious to get a copy. I found that was easier said than done. Amazon advertises the price of the paperback at $330.00 Why? Heaven only knows and I'm obviously not on Heaven's "to know" list. I'm hoping that the decimal is misplaced. I recognized Julian & Cameron from Armed & Dangerous...so it was a little like visiting old friends. The writing is as usual, wonderful...the scenes are vivid. You never have so much description that the story lags. You can tell from the cover that there's going to be men with guns on the scene, but the suspense is slowly draw out. The author is so good at setting up the characters but it's never obvious where the story is going, so the surprise is still genuine at each plot twist. The secretive job is never truly explained but it's always implied. With other books, this can be a drawback but here it only served to put the reader in the shoes of the main character. Waiting for much more but not at $300.00 for a paperback:) ( )

I liked it. I liked the men. Julian was so hot and Cameron was so loving. The story was great, but at the end I still have no idea what's going to happen next. I read this because I was told that I needed to read this before after Divide & Conquer and before Armed & Dangerous in the Cut & Run series so I did. It was a great read now I can't wait to get back to my boys in C&R :)
