Thus the mystery of Rosalie’s parenthood is the central theme of the book, added to which is several capers involving the well-meaning Anderson Crow, who is Tinkletown’s marshal.
It’s these capers that are the most entertaining aspects of the tale. Of the dozen McCutcheon books I’ve read to date, Anderson is in my view the best of this author’s characters. He’s not a dashing young hero who seldom puts a foot wrong; he’s a dithering old man who often puts his foot in it.
So good are the dialogue exchanges between Anderson and any of the other characters that when he’s absent from the pages for some time the story suffers because of it.
That said, the scenes where Rosalie ends up in the clutches of a villainous quartet are entertaining. This is a change of tone, as for the most part this is a humorous novel, but it becomes serious – even sinister – when the heroine is at the mercy of three nasty men and an even nastier woman.
So apart from a few lulls here and there this was an enjoyable read. ( )
