Short excerpt: A cup of coffee was smoking on a small inlaid table, which was stained with liquors burnt by cigars, notched by the penknife of the victorious officer, who occasionally would stop while sharpening a pencil, to jot down figures, or to make a drawing on it, just as it took his fancy. Maupassant might be best known for the Horla but apart from that there isn't any other weird fiction or even much in the way of ghost story in this collection.
They're just general tales usually but not always involving a death. The subtitle is 'Short Stories of the Tragedy and Comedy of Life', and is perfectly apt.
Also very accurate is this from the goodreads author profile ' Maupassant's short stories are characterized by their economy of style and their efficient effortless dénouement.' .
Without any genre hook like supernatural or sc-fi i really expected this to be 2 stars, as in goodish but not worth recommending given how many other books there are in the world :P . However the tales grew on me whereas many other collections tended to get more boring over time.
A very nice general assortment of subjects and tones, slanting towards the tragic or the darkly comic.
Edit: There's a really moving rendition of 'Simon's Papa' on Librivox.
