( ) The more Renaissance plays I read, the more I understand why Shakespeare is one of the only playwrights from the period still performed today. While this one is not simplistic (in fact, the plot gets ever more complex, almost labyrinthine at times), and there are some very good lines, the overall sense is that this is a morality play with a particular message to hammer home - and hammer it home it does. The poor characters are put through hell - literally - in order to make a pious statement. An interesting look at a period piece, but falling far short of good. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

El esclavo del demonio is one of the most famous works of Mira de Amescua, and perhaps the best religious comedy from the Golden Age of Spain. Inspired by the Faustian legend of a Portuguese monk, frey Gil de Santarem (also called Egidio), it tells of an ascetic's life, a frenzied licentious existence, and mastery of the secrets of necromancy. In classic Faustian style, a character sells his sould to the devil. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
