Excerpt from The Best of H. E. Bates It was only, a little over a year ago that I came across H. E. Bates' work; up until then, I had never even heard his name, strange as this may sound. I blush now when I read that he is the author Of forty or more books, has been translated into a dozen or more languages, and that 'his reputation in America, Australia and New Zealand equals, and in some cases surpasses, that in his own country.' Confusingly there are two different collections entitled (at least sometimes) 'The Best of H. E. Bates'.

One is a collection containing 11 works (3 novels and 8 short stories): Fair stood the wind for France--The purple plain--The darling buds of May--The triple echo--The four beauties--The simple life--The Bedfordshire clanger--The major of Hussars--The wild cherry tree--The little farm--Great Uncle Crow. This was issued by Michael Joseph in the UK in 1980, and is sometimes found listed as 'Volume 1' (although as far as I can tell this was no Volume 2). This UK version can be identified by the isbn 0718119436 or the subtitle 'A Selection of Novels and Short Stories'

The other version is a collection of 35 short stories, which was issued in the UK as 'Seven by Five' but by Little Brown in the US in 1963 under the 'Best of' title. This contained the following stories.
The Flame --
A flower piece --
The mower --
Time --
The mill --
The station --
The kimono --
Breeze Anstey --
The ox --
Colonel Julian --
The Lighthouse --
The flag --
The frontier --
A Christmas song --
The major of Hussars --
Elaine --
The daffodil sky --
The good corn --
Country society --
Across the bay --
Chaff in the wind --
The evolution of Saxby --
Go lovely Rose --
The maker of coffins. Love in a Wych Elm --
Let's play soldiers --
The watercress girl --
The Cowslip field --
Great Uncle Crow --
The enchantress --
Now sleeps the crimson petal --
Where the cloud breaks --
Lost ball --
Thelma --
Mrs Eglantine.
At least some of the copies listed on LT under the 'Best of' title but lacking the Michael Joseph isbn or subtitle must be the Little Brown collection.

(My copy is the Little Brown collection so I have added in brackets [UK title: Seven By Five] and combined it with that title. Maybe some day I'll find the energy to dig down into individual libraries to see which others are Little Browns that can be recombined.)
