Newmarket was for many years New Zealand's smallest and wealthiest borough. It was also know as 'The Gateway to Auckland' and, above all, 'The Home of Industry'. A major road and rail junction, Newmarket was an important early staging post for travellers and the military. It has been the seat of several brewing empires, and is still the New Zealand base of Lion Breweries. It has had its share of mysteries, such as the infamous 'Gaslight Sports', and 'the jamming of 1ZB'. Newmarket, known to Maori as Te Ti Tutahi, the 'sacred cabbage tree standing alone', grew into 'bustling Broadway' - still today New Zealand's busiest suburban centre. This book looks at the heritage of Newmarket - while much has been lost, some, such as the historic house of Highwic, still survives. It also touches on the lives of the many people who gave Newmarket its remarkable history. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
