Fiction. Mystery. HTML:

Summer is deadly in the mountain community of Mason County, Virginia. Deputy Sheriff Tom Bridger and veterinarian Rachel Goddard are caught in a maelstrom of lies that stretch far into the past and suspicions that threaten the future. Cam and Meredith Taylor are murdered within hours of one another, and Rachel is dragged into the case because she heard "but didn't see" Cam's murder. The Taylors arrived in Mason County as volunteers in the 1960s War on Poverty, and they stayed on, making loyal friends and bitter enemies. The victims' daughter is Tom's former girlfriend, Leslie. She returns home to see justice done and to win Tom back from Rachel. The prime suspect is newcomer Ben Hern, Rachel's childhood friend, and she is desperate to prove him innocent. Leslie pushes for Hern's arrest and launches a campaign of intimidation against Rachel. With the killer targeting Rachel and the community clamoring for an arrest, Tom and Rachel must decide who they can trust.

This is a mystery that can be read as a stand-alone and many times when a novel can be read as a stand-alone, readers do not go back and read the earlier novels or continue with the series. As a frequent writer of reviews I have often shared when a novel can be freely read with absolute pleasure as a stand-alone. I can't say that about Sandra Parshall's Rachel Goddard Mystery series. Why? Let me count the ways!

Sandra Parshall's writing is not to be missed. She knows how to captivate with a mystery series that is more psychological thriller as the series begins. Each novel builds on Rachel's character, her work as a veterinarian, and all of the characters with which she interacts.

I love trying to solve a mystery. With twists and turns, I haven't guessed correctly yet. Love that! It's the type of writing that one can't wait to breeze through and yet the closer that one gets to the end, wishing it all wouldn't end just yet. ( )

Another good book with twists and turns. Happy with the HEA (so far) for Tom and Rachael. ( )

The third in the series featuring veterinarian Rachel Goddard, Broken Places finds her caught between loyalties to her new almost-boyfriend, Sheriff's deputy Tom Bridger, and an old friend, a famous cartoonist, who has bought a place in the mountains and becomes a murder suspect. Another excellent outing by Sandra Parshall; I'm only sorry I've now read all her books and need to wait for her to write another. ( )

Page turning mystery full of secrets. An angry confrontation witnessed by Rachel and Holly and later finding the car on the side of the road of one of the combatants leads them to the sound of a gunshot and discovering the body of one of the combatants. Next they hear his wife is murdered and the their house burned down. Rachel's being threatened by the murderer because he believes she saw him in the woods. Meanwhile Rachel and Tom, the sheriff, relationship is having miscommunication and trust issues. ( )
