Short stories often following the same pattern of structure (if you read the last paragraph first then it will spoil the whole story). Personally I'm not very fond of war fiction so I didn't appreciate the stories of soldiers very much. However the author's experiences in the American Civil War obviously had a major role in shaping his stories into what they are. This volume contains An Inhabitant of Carcosa, referred to in Moore's Neonomicon. I was pleasantly surprised with the story Moxon's Master, an early science fiction story about a machine "in the shape of a person" (pre-robot). Most of the stories were preoccupied with death, murder and consciousness, some more enjoyable than others. ( ) Dr. Dorrimore, a hypnotist who has acquired his skills from India tries to experiment with Mr. Manrich. During the experiment Mr. Manrich started believing that whatever he was watching is all true, but the truth is revealed at a much later stage. Not a usual Ambrose Bierce's horror story, but a really captivating one. I would really recommend to read the story.
