Amelia Bloomer's style choices changed the nation. Helps girls see that they can change things around them if they try and be themselves. ( ) I read a book about Amelia Bloomer. One important thing I learned about her was she didn't make bloomers, but since she was so dedicated to changing the way women had to dress they named the piece of clothing after her last name. Some interesting facts about Amelia are she was a women's rights advocate. She thought is was silly that proper ladies couldn't vote. She also didn't like that women couldn't work, so she started a newspaper company. She name the newspaper THE LILY. She didn't like that proper ladies had to wear dress that were heavy and uncomfortable. She sewed herself an matching outfit that would be comfortable. She wrote about her new clothes in THE LILY, and ladies from all over where mailing her letters about her outfit. This book was accurate. The biography was very organized it told you important facts about Amelia Bloomer. I thought that this book was very interesting. It shows and describes different times in our history when women have had to fight for their rights such as voting and such. Im not sure that I would read this to my students because even though times have changed, this shows a time where women were viewed differently as men. It could also be good to read this to my students to show them the growth in history our society has had. Age Appropriateness (Primary, Intermediate, Middle School): Intermediate Review/Critique: This book is about a Amelia Bloomer who was a very influential women of her time. She defied social standards and gave women a voice in society. Not only did she start her own newspaper, she also changed the fashion world for women. Comments on Use: I really enjoyed this book because I think it highlighted ways that girls could be powerful despite social norms. The book also highlighted cultural differences overtime which not every student would be familiar with. I would use this book in my classroom if I was to go over important women or explore history from that time period. Media: gouache geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
