Following on the heels of THE NOBODY, his Vertigo graphic novel debut, writer/artist Jeff Lemire pens his very first ongoing series SWEET TOOTH. A cross between Bambi and Cormac McCarthy's The Road, SWEET TOOTH tells the story of Gus, a rare new breed of human/animal hybrid children, has been raised in isolation following an inexplicable pandemic that struck a decade earlier. Now, with the death of his father he's left to fend for himself . . . until he meets a hulking drifter named Jepperd who promises to help him. Jepperd and Gus set out on a post-apocalyptic journey into the devastated American landscape to find 'the Preserve" a refuge for hybrids. This unique and haunting new series is written and illustrated by Eisner-nominated creator Lemire (The Essex County Trilogy).… (meer)

This is a post-apocalyptic Southern gothic in the tradition of The Road and The Stand. It's about a human/animal hybrid boy, named Gus (aka Sweet Tooth)trying to survive in the aftermath of the virus known as the Affliction. After the death of his father, Gus teams up with a mysterious man named Jeppered in order to reach "The Preserve", a fabled safe-haven for hybrid children. But, the world beyond the woods Gus lives in is a treacherous place and Jepperd has alternative motives....

This is a remarkable and devastating story. ( )

I've been wanting to read this one for a long time, so when I saw the Netflix adaptation was about to drop I leapt into action (I'm always a fan of reading the book first, when I know there's a book anyway). I've become a big Jeff Lemire fan, and I'm happy to say this has everything I wanted it to: his realistic-adjacent sketching, a grim and intriguing storyline, and wonderfully well-rounded characters.

There are hints at a much larger story here, and I'm very excited to continue the series. I mean this one ends on a panel with a grizzled old guy saying "I'm going to kill them all," so it's not like I can just stop reading now haha. It's a post-apocalyptic tale in the vein of The Road, with young innocent thrown into companionship with older world-weary survivor. No characters are clearly good or evil here (with the exception of the protagonist, possibly) which I absolutely love, and I'm very interested to see where the story goes next. ( )

Good, and Jeff Lemire's art ended up growing on me a lot, but I kind of feel like this is just mostly table setting for the real action to come later. ( )

This is a dystopian story where humankind has been dying out and a new hydrid appears: children that are half human, half animals. Once again, exceptional graphics from Jeff Lemire, who appears to have gorgeous illustrations as well as compelling stories in his portfolio. I found the protagonist to be quite lovable and can't wait to get my hands on the next volumes!

OH snap! I may very well come back and give this 5 stars...this was great! The storyline was right up my alley- intriguing, somewhat dark, and with just enough info to keep me guessing. Lemire's art is wonderful, his layouts in particular are worth reading this if you're a comic fan. I can't wait to pick up the next one, especially after the way this one ends. ( )
