I love that this book could have ended with the goose finally being caught after a day of destruction, but instead asks the question why the goose might have escaped in the first place. As a result, the ending is unexpectedly tender. Kellogg’s illustrations are vibrant and full of life and humor, with fun sequences of cause and effect from one page to the next. I also appreciated the unusual rhyme scheme, which further energized the story. C really liked that the first image reveals that the goose let himself out of the pen!

This book is about a goose getting loose on the farm. It describes all of the scenarios that the goose had when on the loose, and he let out one herd of cattle which ran into town. They soon realized that it was because of migration. I enjoyed this book because all of the scenarios that the goose got in were funny and pictures were detailed. This book had a lot of rhyming words which can be incorporated in younger grades when teaching rhyming. The students can choose an animal in the story and come up with other words that rhyme with it.

Steven Kellogg is not my favorite illustrator, but he sure has a knack for choosing (and writing) good stories to illustrate.  This is an interesting example.  An homage to freedom, it starts out silly as the goose frees all the other animals and raises havoc on the farm.  At the end it gets more poetic and poignant, and the art gets dreamier.  I do recommend you read it if it is in your library. I had mixed feelings about the story, the day the goose got loose. One reason that I enjoyed reading the book was because of the language and words choice. The whole book rhymed, which helped the story flow. Also, every page ended with "the day the goose got loose." I liked this because the pages will talk about all the stuff that happened to the other animals and then reminds you why everything was so hectic, which is because the goose got loose. One reason that I didn't enjoy the story was because of the plot. There was a problem in the beginning, with the goose, which never got solved because it ended up being a child's dream. Normally, I enjoy reading books with suspense but this story did not have a definite ending, which left me wondering about the story. I would have liked to know what happened to the goose. The main idea of this book was imagination. Children have all types of dreams and this story was about another child's imagination. ( )

A silly story, lots of action and rhyming. Lovely illustrations that are sure to get kids laughing. Would be a fun before recess or outside book, allowing the kids to get a little rambunctious and silly themselves. ( )
