Het begint met een mooie vrouw en een uitdaging. Alyssa Bradford vraagt filmmaker Eric Shaw om een documentaire te maken over haar schoonvader, Campbell Bradford, een hoogbejaarde miljonair met een mysterieus verleden. Eric neemt de opdracht aan, ook al is er maar weinig informatie voorhanden: alleen de naam van Bradfords afgelegen geboortestadje en een antiek flesje met water dat hij zijn hele leven al bij zich draagt. Eric reist af naar West Baden, ooit beroemd om zijn geneeskrachtige bronnen en het exclusieve hotel dat recentelijk in zijn oude glorie is hersteld. Al snel na zijn aankomst krijgt Eric last van angstaanjagende visioenen, die steeds intenser en realistischer worden naarmate hij meer te weten komt over de geschiedenis van het hotel. Recensie(s) NBD|Biblion recensie Terwijl de oude Campbell Bradford stervende is, huurt zijn schoondochter ex-filmaker Eric Shaw in om een film over diens leven te maken. Er liggen heel wat geheimen verscholen in zijn jeugd in een gebied in Indiana waar hij is opgegroeid. Het West Baden Spring Hotel en een geheimzinnige bron spelen een hoofdrol. Shaw maakt kennis met de vreemde eigenschappen van het bronwater: het lijkt hem hallucinaties te bezorgen. Maar terwijl hij onderzoek doet, lijken meer krachten uit het verleden een rol te gaan spelen. Liefhebbers van Stephen King of Dean Koontz zullen met deze thriller aan hun trekken komen. Wat betreft bovennatuurlijke of onnatuurlijke gebeurtenissen staat Koryta dichter bij Koontz dan bij King. Hij brengt de hoofdpersonen knap tot leven, laat langzaamaan een sfeer van onzekerheid en dreiging ontstaan en heeft juist voldoende kwaadaardigheid ingebouwd om de dreiging reeel te maken. Hoewel niet-liefhebbers van het genre de spanning niet zo zullen voelen, heeft de schrijver een boek met een geheel eigen onheilspellende sfeer en goede opbouw naar een climax geschreven.
