Every human life is made up of the light and the dark, the happy and the sad, the vital and the deadening. How you think about this rhythm of moods makes all the difference. Our lives are filled with emotional tunnels: the loss of a loved one or end of a relationship, aging and illness, career disappointments or just an ongoing sense of dissatisfaction with life. Society tends to view these "dark nights" in clinical terms as obstacles to be overcome as quickly as possible. But Moore shows how honoring these periods of fragility as periods of incubation and positive opportunities to delve the soul's deepest needs can provide healing and a new understanding of life's meaning. Dark Nights of the Soul presents these metaphoric dark nights not as the enemy, but as times of transition, occasions to restore yourself, and transforming rites of passage, revealing an uplifting and inspiring new outlook on such topics as: * The healing power of melancholy * The sexual dark night and the mysteries of matrimony * Finding solace during illness and in aging * Anxiety, anger, and temporary Insanities * Linking creativity, spirituality, and emotional struggles * Finding meaning and beauty in the darkness… (meer)

This is the first book I've read by Thomas Moore. I'll probably look for others to read in the future. This book admits that there are many ordeals in life. To live a good life we must learn to expect and accept the "dark nights." The author advocates dealing with the "dark nights" 'not as the enemy, but as times of transition, occasions to restore yourself, and transforming rights of passage. (quoted from the book flap).' ( )

I picked this audio book up on a whim when I was feeling
a bit down. I got over being down, but became really
interested in the book for a number of reasons. First, the
author cites a multitude of religious, philosophical and
cultural sources for his discussion. I appreciated how he
wove in different traditions and mythologies into the book.
I had to buy a print copy, so I could keep track of all the
sources I wanted to read later!

The book discusses those times in our lives when we are
not feeling as cheerful as society thinks we should. Moore
makes a distinction between clinical depression and what
he terms the dark night of the soul. He discusses different
cultural solutions for depression, both current and historical, as well as the benefits of a bit of reclusiveness while we work out our issues.

One thing I liked about this book was the references to various pieces of literature. ( )
