Readhowyouwant 16 point large print. In the aftermath of the Great Depression, few opportunities existed for working-class boys, but at just 18 Danny Dunn has a good deal going for him: brains, looks, sporting ability - and an easy charm. His parents run The Hero, a favourite neighbourhood pub, and Danny is a local hero. Luck changes for Danny when he signs up to go to war. He returns home a physically broken man, to a life that will be changed for ever. Together with Helen, a woman of strength, character and intelligence who becomes his wife, he sets about rebuilding his life. It is a life tormented by personal demons, and shaped by compassion, corruption, love and power - and the gift of twin daughters, Sam and Gabby. Set against a backdrop of Australian pubs and politics, The Story of Danny Dunn is an Australian family saga spanning three generations. It is a compelling tale of love, ambition and the destructive power of obsession, at a time of great change in Australia's history.… (meer)

‘The Story of Danny Dunn’ was a thoroughly enjoyable yarn from start to finish. Due to the fact that I could relate and remember many of the fifties and sixties events this novel, it was hard to put down at night so I could get my beauty sleep! For those born in the middle of last century Danny Dunn will bring back many memories, and for those a little younger, that’s how it was. A five out of five read for the latest Bryce Courtenay novel. This is a slice of life story of Danny Dunn. His rise from being an athletic jock in a tough slum neighbourhood to a busted up war vet to a married with kids, lawyer and then politician. It is a nice read but throughout the book I felt like I read it before but I had not. The plot is quite predictable in spots...he wants to do something he does it. It is nice to see how but there is little "tension" in the read.

The book moves in jerks...you see his struggles as a young man in a bad neighbourhood but he has the world by the tail because he is a jock....war comes but other than a scene at the end in a Japanese POW camp you don't really experience his life during the war. He is a broken man coming home and this section is interesting as he wrestles with his disfigurement and is lucky to have a very supportive girlfriend. There are parts of the book that will jerk tears but for me the book was quite choppy.

Nice read but no real tension or drama...quite predictable plot. ( )

Danny Dunn is set in an exciting era for Australia with many changes and challenges that face the nation and Bryce Courtney has created a character that is apart of it all.
Danny Dunn is one of those over-achievers whom you want to love but at the same time want to watch fail. The books is hard to take as his life and relationships get better and better and you continue to read because you are curious as to where the heck he is going with it all. In the case of Danny Dunn, the readers persistance and commitment through all the 'life is so great for us Dunn's' chapters pays off. ( )

Like all of Courtenay's books the characters are flawed. This, of course, makes them more real. Also, as in all of his books, there are super strong female characters that hold up the men around them.

Danny Dunn had everything going for him until he became a POW on the Burma Railroad. He returned a broken man. Still, with the help of his wife, he made strides and recovered. At least on the surface. The demons within him made their appearance known, and unfortunately his daughters often felt the repercussions of his acerbic tongue. This sets the tone for a story of a man trying to do what is right in the face of terrible odds, and at a cost of great suffering.

Courtenay is a master storyteller. It is difficult not to get drawn into this world of pre and post war Australia. ( )
