He is a broken man coming home and this section is interesting as he wrestles with his disfigurement and is lucky to have a very supportive girlfriend. There are parts of the book that will jerk tears but for me the book was quite choppy. Nice read but no real tension or drama...quite predictable plot. The books is hard to take as his life and relationships get better and better and you continue to read because you are curious as to where the heck he is going with it all. In the case of Danny Dunn, the readers persistance and commitment through all the 'life is so great for us Dunn's' chapters pays off. Still, with the help of his wife, he made strides and recovered. At least on the surface. The demons within him made their appearance known, and unfortunately his daughters often felt the repercussions of his acerbic tongue. This sets the tone for a story of a man trying to do what is right in the face of terrible odds, and at a cost of great suffering. Courtenay is a master storyteller.
