This collection of over forty of Anderson's most popular stories includes 'The Ugly Duckling', 'The Red Shoes', and 'The Little Match Girl.' The highest standards in editing and production have been applied to the Wordsworth Children's Classics, while the low price makes them affordable for everyone. Wordsworth's list covers a range of the best-loved stories for children, from nursery tales, classic fables, and fairy tales to stories that will appeal to older children and adults alike. Many of these volumes have contemporary illustrations, and while they are ideal for shared family reading, their attractive format will also encourage children to read for themselves. Like all Wordsworth Editions, these children's books represent unbeatable value. AUTHOR: Hans Christian Andersen (April 2 1805 - August 4 1875) was a Danish author and poet, most famous for his fairy tales. During Andersen's lifetime he was feted by royalty and acclaimed for having brought joy to children across Europe. His fairy tales have been translated into over 150 languages and continue to be published in millions of copies all over the world and inspired many other works.… (meer)

This is the unabridged collection of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales. There are some very good tales in here, but that is not the norm. Most of the stories are confusing and/or boring, and his idea of a happy ending seems to be that the main character gets to die and go to heaven. This has a lot of religious content/ references. A few stories might be good for discussing unhappy endings. (That's my school review.)

Basically, this book combined with another slowed down my reading for an entire summer last year- it was just so dreadfully boring! I'm a fan of reading fairy tale retellings and originals, but these were awful! They were slow, boring reads, and, as I said, Anderson's idea of a happy ending is that the characters get to die and go to heaven. Yeah. Pretty disturbing. ( )
