Not as powerful as the Tell-tale Heart and the brilliant Berenice. This one misses the extra layer. Furthermore, the writing style doesn't fit the narrator. ( )

Definitely a horrible Poe short story. It's extra horrible if you are an animal lover. Usually dark themes don't bother me and many horror novels don't instill a sense of dread. However, Poe achieves what no one else I've read so far has: the sense of, "No, I don't want to keep reading this and find out all the other things that are to happen." I'd rate it higher for Poe's effective story telling, but I'm conflicted because it involves hurting animals. ( )

Anything with a live grave in a basement will be compared to the Cask of Amontillado and thereafter it's a slippery slope. ( )

Every time I encounter a reading slump, I always turn to Poe’s short stories. He surely never disappoints.

The Black Cat tells a horrifying story of a morbid man and I am amazed by how the few pages of this story have conveyed such strong emotions in me. ( )

Perfectly timed Halloween read (though we don't celebrate here in Australia). The weather is super dreary and I have been wanting to read some shorter classic horrors for a while. Definitely grab yourself a copy of this one. I read it on the Serial Reader app for free. ( )
