I read a fair amount of novels and I want to share that this one contains one of the saddest and most miserable cast of characters and circumstances that I have read. And I have read Russian and Japanese novels!!! Seriously, all of this is so depressing and just sorrows on every page. Every single character is unhappy. The happiest character is a black cat whose owner has just died and for the most part he is left alone all day and night to hope someone feeds him. Yikes. Duncan Kincaid and Jemma James investigate the possible assisted suicide/murder of Jasmine Dent, an almost 50-year-old woman living in the flat just below Duncan Kincaid's flat. He had visited her often. Jasmine spent part of her childhood in India where she lost her mother at the birth of brother Theo and her father when she was 15. She is now terminally ill with lung cancer. Her friends include workmate Meg, the Major who lives below her and was in India at the same time as she was, and home health nurse Felicity. Kincaid must figure out who would want to kill her and why. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

HTML:From an author who is "writing in P.D. James territory" (Associated Press) comes a compelling Scotland Yard detective novel in the entertaining Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James series. Perhaps it is a blessing when Jasmine Dent dies in her sleep. At long last an end has come to the suffering of a body horribly ravaged by disease. It may well have been suicide; she had certainly expressed her willingness to speed the inevitable. But small inconsistencies lead her neighbor, Superintendent Duncan Kincaid of Scotland Yard, to a startling conclusion: Jasmine Dent was murdered. But if not for mercy, why would someone destroy a life already so fragile and doomed? As Kincaid and his capable and appealing assistant Sergeant Gemma James sift through the dead woman's strange history, a troubling puzzle begins to take shapeâ??a bizarre amalgam of good and evil, of charity and crime...and of the blinding passions that can drive the human animal to perform cruel and inhuman ac Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |

In this second volume of the series, we get to see a little more of Gemma, which is nice. I thought the investigation moved rather slowly, but it might just be the format (I listened to the audiobook). I guessed "whodunit?" before the solution was revealed, but not the motive behind it. Everything came together in a satisfactory manner. This is shaping up to be a solid series; I'll keep reading. ( )
