Cuatro mujeres trabajan (a las órdenes de un hombre) en una oficina pública danesa dedicada a buscar información sobre genocidios. En algún momento el autor nos informa que los daneses en general parecen sentirse al margen del mal en el mundo porque se las arreglaron para ayudar a los judíos y no enemistarse con los nazis durante la segunda guerra mundial. Bien, pues estas mujeres, independientes, liberales, muy cultas y muy bien relacionadas (eso sí, unas mas que otras), que hacen un trabajo que les permite vivir estupendamente y a la vez creer que están salvando el mundo, se dedican a darse por culo unas a otras por turno. Pasan de la adoración extrema al más profundo odio y pueden llegar a ser extremadamente crueles cuando se trata de joder a la vecina a la que poco antes o poco después adoraban o adorarán.Y sin que el hombre, el jefe, se entere de nada.

En un momento dado, al principio, empiezan a llegarles mensajes amenazantes a todas. Pero en realidad, hasta bien pasada la página 400 no empieza la cosa a ponerse seria, y la mayor parte del tiempo, hasta el final, las únicas que hacen algo ilegal o inmoral son ellas mismas. Y es que esto de la psicología femenina profunda debe ser muy complejo. O eso quiere hacernos creer el autor.

La novela engancha, claro. No deja de ser un buen producto. Pero no me imagino a ninguna de mis muchas compañeras de trabajo (algunas auténticas arpías) haciendo ni de lejos lo que hacen estas impecables danesas. La verdad es que se me han hecho profundamente antipáticas, siempre haciendo gala de su superioridad moral e intelectual, codeándose con grandes cerebros, con gente muy, pero que muy solidaria, organizando conferencias (al parecer, siempre con gran éxito) y comiendo comida vegetariana o al menos ecológica.

En cuanto a los hombres, se dividen en dos grupos muy claros: los daneses, similares a las protagonistas pero con la ventaja de no verse implicados en sus tejemanejes salvo cuando les matan. Y los malos, extranjeros, morenos, feos y siniestros y que no saben apreciar lo mucho que la inmaculada sociedad nórdica les ha ofrecido. En fin, que la novela está bien, pero tiene aspectos insufribles. Y aquí lo dejo porque acabaré quitándole alguna estrella, y tampoco sería justo. ( )

For me personally, this is a 5 star book, though it is not a book I would recommend to just anyone. Subject matter can at times be harsh.
I would lump this in a Secret History/The Likeness/Natsuo Kirino's Out category. The category of a "normal" or good person doing evil things and how that manifests within them. This was a very slow book to start and patience will win out. There are some very tense parts of the book and at times I felt there were some very Hitchcock like moments. The slow simmer builds and reaches a full boil that has left me now after finishing putting the sequence of events/reality of events together. The articles within on genocide are at times hard to read due to their harshness, but at other times very interesting in their psychology, and they definitely run parallel to the main story. I am expecting this to be optioned for a movie and will hope that it is a foreign film (at least first, ala the Stieg Larsson books). I expect I will re-read this, in whole or part, to see it through new eyes. This one will stay with me for a while. ( )

Another in the ever expanding sub-genre of Scandinavian thrillers with incredibly stilted dialog, terrible translation, improbable coincidences, pop psychology, insufferable hi-tech and current event references, and self-absorbed intellectual proselytizers out to save the world. Too bad since the premise is interesting and the story does kind of grow on you by the end. ( )
