Is Wapsipinicon just a melodic but meangingless label for a picturesque Iowa river? Or is it a living name rich in historical and cultural associations? It is one of some 200 place names traced to their sources in this account of the American Indian's imapct on land, streams, and communities. They tell of a lost way of life and lend to the map of Iowa what H. L. Mencken once called "barbaric brilliancy." The author dispels some persistent myths about particular names and shows how native names of rivers were especially resistant to efforts to change them. Some place names record migration routes and settlement patterns, reflecting nostalgic remembrance of earlier homes. Others reveal the influence of notable persons and events, popular literature of the time, or once-prevalent flora and fauna. All place names tell something about the communities in which they are found. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
