It might not be worse than some that I've read and even liked lately, but it just started to annoy me so much... I need real history and real romance without father-like male leads... And heroines who act like a little girl. I guess that's why I like more YA, cause there it's fine. Plus the male lead is also a kid and acting like one, so it's just more even there. Guess I just need a bit of a break... ( ) A good story where the main female character is self-aware and concerned about the problems of society enough to do something about it. No weeping pansy here. I enjoyed this well-written historical romance. Even when the male lead was a bit self-involved. There is more to both than meets the eye. Of course the antagonistic ex-mistress was predictable and unlikeable. A rather run-of-the-mill, if not almost boring, romance novel. The characters were very flat and rather plain. Sophie is a very silly character and, although well-intentioned, behaves absurdly at times. Simon is more interesting but we don't really get to see his transition from stuffy to unstuffy as much as we should. The plot was cliched at points. Within the first five pages, I knew what the major source of conflict was going to be between the hero and heroine (and I was right). Not a book that I will be rereading. I really enjoyed Sophie and Simon's romance. Sophie is brash and headstrong but has the best of intentions. Simon is a bit stuffy and is more used to lecturing Sophie than loving her. When Simon decides he needs to marry her for her dowry, Sophie decides she needs to teach him some lessons about love. Though Kelly deals with some serious issues in Industrial England, this book was overall a fun, sexy read with a satisfying happily ever after. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
