This is a powerful picture book by Margaret Wlse. The story tells of different father animals coming home to their young. It ends with a soldier coming home to his son. This was a very emotional book for me, because my brother is active over seas. I found myself tearing up in the book store. ( )

In "The Fathers Are Coming Home," a variety of male animals-- a pig, a snail, a dog, and many others-- return home to their children at nighttime, including a sailor who returns home to his son.

This book brought out a very emotional side in me, because my husband is an active duty airman. While we don't have children yet, I worry about the day I will have to tell them their daddy will be leaving, and explain to them when he will return.

This would be a good book to read near Father's Day, and I could have my students write about their favorite thing to do with their dad. I could also ask them to write about what they think the baby animals like to do with THEIR dads. ( )
