In the empty desert borderlands of Texas and Chihuahua, exploitation is an equal opportunity business, and la mordida, the payoff, is part of every deal. When the corruption gets out of control, Border Patrol agent Dolph Martinez is often called in. Jim Sanderson introduced Dolph Martinez in his first novel, El Camino del Rio. The world-weary bicultural cop with a master's degree in history and a soft spot for the exploited has been promoted. Now he serves on a task force that cuts through red tape on both sides of the border. One morning in Ojinaga, Dolph finds a pistol and a handful of phony documents in a suspect's backpack. Dolph calls in his troops and friends from El Camino del Rio and uncovers a group of heartless dirty dealers in a story that is only too true to today's headlines. And Sanderson's fans will be delighted to find Dolph Martinez meeting up with private investigator Jerri Johnson and her retired Texas Ranger husband Joe Parr, the protagonists of Sanderson's San Antonio novel, 'Safe Delivery'. A hard-boiled detective novel set on the Texas border, where the “detective”, Dolph Martinez, is a Border Patrol agent. Good story, bizarre characters (starting with Pepper, Dolph’s friend/working partner in spite of the fact that Dolph sent him to jail) , fabulous sense-of-place. It’s not quite to my taste, but it’s extremely well written. ( )
