I’m really not familiar enough with the graphic novel format to judge it on its merits as such, so I’m only going to remark on how well I enjoyed it, or more accurately, did not enjoy it.

Although the story is told primarily from Murtaugh’s POV rather than Claire’s, it seems very much like the story I remember from reading Outlander many years ago. Of course, we get how much Murtaugh distrusts her and disapproves of Jamie’s relationship with her, but we already knew that. There’s also a new character added, who doesn’t seem to add much to the story. I didn’t find the artwork very impressive. At least, it didn’t especially help me to connect with the characters or the story. Overall, the book was okay. I’m not sure how someone who isn’t already familiar with the story would have enjoyed it.

I read this for the 2017 Romance Bingo. It would fit several of the squares:
Insta-love: Jamie desperately wants Claire and is willing to risk death to be with her within a few hours of meeting her.
Blown Away: The characters on the cover are certainly windblown, and in several of the panels the characters appear to be battling a high wind, although that just may be how the artist portays action.
Key to My Heart: If I’m interpreting this square correctly, Jamie and Claire are soul-mates, and their love enables them to share dreadful secrets that they hold very close.
Man in a Kilt: Every freakin’ panel has plaid or kilts, although there is a disappointing lack of hairy dude-knees
Eyeshadow and Heaving Bosoms: Claire’s boobs seem to swell and shrink throughout the book, but at times she could give Dolly Parton a run for her money. The artwork also seems to have gifted them with their own independent motion. They might even be sentient, they’re so lively.
Virgin Best First Time: This time, it’s the guy who’s the virgin, and the panel of them mid-coitus is hilariously captioned with a white thought-bubble over Jamie’s head, “Holy God!”
Wedding Bells: The whole plot revolves around the forced marriage trope
Historical Romance: Time-travel to the 1700s

As a companion piece to the first book it does work, but standing on it's own to legs it is a little to simplistic. It almost ended up feeling like a highlight reel of the first Outlander book.
It was nice to join these characters again, and I did enjoy the read.

I'm a huge Outlander fan, so I couldn't resist this graphic novel. The Exile covers the first third of Outlander, mainly told from Murtagh and Jamie's viewpoints. The first part covers the time when Jamie first returns from France, briefly mentioned in Outlander. Jamie comes across as a bit headstrong though not reckless and is kept on track by his godfather, Murtagh. Murtagh witnesses Claire's arrival through the stones, making him suspicious of her and why she is there. Unlike the original, there is an additional character in Kenneth, another time-traveler and cohort of Geillis. I never quite understood his purpose. The events that occur during their time at Castle Leoch and on the rent collecting journey were well done. The wedding scene was also good.

Having read Outlander several times, I never had a problem following the story in this book. The graphic novel format is more condensed, without the signature descriptive prose of the original. I didn't care much for many of the illustrations. The men all looked enough alike that it was sometimes challenging to figure out who was speaking. Claire's portrayal isn't so good either. I thought she looked harsh. I also agree with other reviewers that her proportions were highly exaggerated.

Overall, I enjoyed the graphic novel. I think it helps that I'm familiar with the story. I'm not sure that it would be a good introduction to the Outlander world. ( )

The Exile (2010) by Diana Gabaldon, illustrated by Hoang Nguyen. The subtitle on this is “An Outlander Graphic Novel” which tells you all you really need to know. If you are a big fan of the Outlander series of books, or the television show, then this will be right up your alley. If you just wanted an introduction to the series and don’t have access to the televised series, this is a great way to get into the action. Or if you just like graphic novels, you can’t go wrong with this well written and beautifully illustrated introduction to Outlander.
This is a retelling of the initial events in the first book told from Jamie Fraser’s viewpoint. You get to meet some of the other characters from the books including Cap’t Black Jack Randall, enemy of all Scots and Jamie in particular.
The action is fierce, paling only to the romance of the story. In short, this is a fine introduction to the stories and/or an excellent addition to the stories. ( )

Not great. It's an abridged version of the first third of Outlander with the addition of a pointless and senseless subplot. As for the art, the backgrounds are superb, but the people aren't always up to snuff, with the female characters tending to look more like tavern wenches at a Renaissance fair than respectable 18th century Scottish women.
