As a Warning, this will have some vaguely insinuated spoilers.

I'm a big fan of Kathryne Kennedy's. I love her Relics of Merlin books and I really enjoyed My Unfair Lady historical romance. When I heard about this it wasn't even a question--I wanted it. The plot was intriguing, the cover (the original cover) was awesome and I'm a sucker for fantasy-historical romances. And in a lot of ways this book didn't let me down.

Truthfully speaking it didn't let me down at all except for the resolution of the problem facing Dominic and Cassandra. Its not that I didn't believe it, I did or that it didn't seem plausible, but it left so many open-ended issues to my thinking.

Plausibility was established very quickly, other than their personality differences Dominic and his father were identical, so yes the resolution was possible assuming Dominic could uphold his end of it. But that was the whole problem I had as well;I couldn't believe that someone of Elven Fire Lord's stature would so easily be emulated. Even by his own son. And the book didn't allow for too much thinking after the fact, it happened, some loose ends regarding Cassandra were tied up and then suddenly the end.

Obviously this is the first in a series, so it will (hopefully) be discussed later on, but as an ending it left me feeling unsatisfied and thinking it was more of a cop out.

As for the rest of the book, like I said I was very happy! The world of 1724 London ruled by Elves, is much more political and cunning then the 'real' Victorian London. The Elves don't view humans as really worth their time, but they allow the royal humans some latitude (like special pets really). The Resistance that Cassandra belongs to is dedicated to pushing the Elves out of power for good, or at the very least getting some better freedoms for humans and half-elves.

Despite all appearances to the contrary Cassandra was sent to kill Dominic, a Champion of the Fire Lord's (as well as being his half-human son) who has learned to keep his emotions tightly locked away so his father couldn't exploit them. Its rather amusing to watch both Cassandra and Dominic internally vie for who won't care for who the most. But love, it has a way of equalizing things.

My favorite character remains Ador, the a dragon in the Fire Lord's keeping. He's rather disdainful of everyone, but he is grudgingly fond of Dominic and Cassandra. Well tolerant at least.

In the end I fell in love with the world and the premise, so I'll be reading the second book sure as rain, but this one just wasn't my cup of tea unfortunately. ( )

A great read and it shows how with a little bit of the truth a lie can be perpetuated ( )

The book gets off to a slow start but improves. The last 100 pages are excellent. I will read the sequel to see what happens next in the world. ( )

Warning: Rant ahead!

In the alternate world of the Elven Lords, England is conquered and enslaved by 7 megalomanic elves, who war amongst themselves for the honor of keeping the King of England as a trophy. Dominic Raikes is the bastard son of the Elven Lord of Firehame, a tyrannical and sadistic despot, who loves nothing more than torturing his subjects, especially his son. After winning the King for his father, Dominic is forced into an arranged marriage with Lady Cassandra, but little does he know that his new bride is an assassin for the Rebellion assigned with the task of murdering Dominic’s father.

Very disappointing. The basic plot of The Fire Lord’s Lover has such incredible potential. Unfortunately, the overly descriptive writing, weak characterization and unrealistic romance ruin what could otherwise have been an excellent story.

Cassandra starts out as an engaging heroine with an interesting upbringing and a seemingly suicidal mission. One would expect her to be strong-willed and well-trained in the arts of the assassin, but one is bound to be disappointed as Cass’s weapon of choice is not knives, swords or even rifles - it is dancing!

Dominic has all the traits of the tortured hero - abused by his father and forced into being his champion, Dominic has closed himself off to all human companionship for fear that his father will murder anyone he gets close to. After one night of sex, he finds himself unable to live without Cass, but instead of worshipping the ground she walks on (as any other possessive alpha would do), Dominic insults and demeans her, and flaunts his mistress in her face - yup, not exactly hero behavior is it?

The attraction between Dominic and Cassandra lacks any sort of foundation and their chemistry is virtually non-existent, which makes their romance incomprehensible.

Although the world building is intriguing, Kennedy’s writing style leaves a lot to be desired. Rather than providing the necessary detail that would flesh out the elves origins and abilities, she provides pages and pages of unnecessary descriptions of decoration, fashion and horticulture. There are a number of action scenes that could have contributed to the plot, but they are short-lived and anticlimactic, including the final confrontation between Dominic and his father.

The only character that was remotely interesting was the dragon. Unfortunately, he too is underdeveloped and instead of a powerful being, he is more of a gelding who speaks in hints and riddles, and never actually does anything.

All in all, this is a prime example of how to ruin a wonderful premise. ( )

Forced to hide and deny his human nature the bastard son of vicious elven lord marries a well bred lady who hides a secret dedication to the rebellion and plans to kill the father. They are instantly deeply attracted to one another and though the hero fights his growing affection to his wife, eventually he succumbs and realizing he more than cares for her, he loves her. It doesn't take long for his to figure out she married him to kill his father and although he would like nothing more than for her to succeed he knows the attempt will kill her in the process. He is portrayed as a cold, heartless and vicious general but it very clear inside he longs for his fathers approval (twisted as it is) and love from his wife who begins to melt his heart. It's a careful balancing act to feel what he does for the heroine and at the same time to hide such feelings from his father as she will be kills if they are found out. I loved the scene when she takes it upon herself to free a kidnapped girl and when he realizes it, he distracts his father but suffering terrible pain. Afterwards he is not angry that she forced it upon him, but rather worried that was hurt. Sooo sweet. ( )
