In Caitli?n R. Kiernan's The Ammonite Violin & Others, one of contemporary dark fantasy's most bewitching and distinctive voices is back with another banquet of the weird and unexpected. In his introduction, Jeff VanderMeer (City of Saints and Madmen, Finch) writes, "Kiernan creates her own light in this remarkable collection, and shines it on dark places. In doing so, she gives us gritty, lyrical, horrible, beautiful truths." The Ammonite Violin & Others, the author rises to meet the high expectations she set with such collections as Tales of Pain and Wonder, A is for Alien, and the World Fantasy Award-nominated To Charles Fort, With Love. Within these pages, you'll discover a dazzling suite of stories situated on the borderlands between the unspeakable and the erotic, the grotesque, and the sublime. Here are stories of dream and metamorphosis, strange lands, and beings existing beyond the veil of death and beyond this earth. Here is a selkie who's lost her sealskin, a woman with a blackhole in her heart, a fairie girl fallen to the Queen of Decay, the descent of a modern-day Orpheus, and a killer who has fashioned the most exquisite musical instrument from the remains of one of his victims. Here are dreams, nightmares, and worse things yet. The Ammonite Violin & Others is comprised of stories first published in the subscription only Sirenia Digest, run by Caitlin for her most devoted readers. This publication marks the stories' first availability to the general public.… (meer)

...The type of work Kiernan writes is not material I read a lot. Although I try to read a decent amount of short fiction, most of it is science fiction and however you choose to label Kiernan's work, science fiction most likely isn't it. I had absolutely no idea what to expect of this collection, I guess you could say it was a bit of a gamble. One that paid off handsomely. I very much enjoyed reading The Ammonite Violin and Others. I may have to check out one of Kiernan novel length works. I would be interesting to see how Kiernan's approach would work for a longer piece. I can feel that to read stack growing again.

Kiernan, who has been described as “H.P. Lovecraft's spiritual granddaughter,” here presents a collection of 20 short stories displaying her characteristic range of dark, tightly crafted genre stories that ranging from horror through dark fantasy through ghost story and the just plain unexplainable. Kiernan’s prose is visceral and throbbing, and her imagery is taut, often using abstruse scientific terminology when describing the utterly unreal and nightmarish. Sexuality and obsession pulse through many of the stories and the narrators often find themselves in the thrall of hypnotically powerful and not-quite-sane lovers. Stand-outs in the collection include the title story, in which a serial killer and a violinist both achieve the pinacle of their craft; “The Madam of the Narrow Houses,” featuring a woman born to minister to ghosts; and “The Lovesong of Lady Ratteanrufer,” in which a troubled young woman falls in love with the king of the rats and brings her own sort of doom to his enemies.
