Dès son arrivée à Florence, Rena Greenblatt, belle quadra, artiste photographe, regrette déjà d'avoir proposé à son père, Simon, et à sa belle-mère, Ingrid, de les accompagner pour une semaine de pérégrinations en Toscane. Le premier, qui fut un brillant chercheur, passionné de neurosciences, vient de fêter ses 70 ans et c'est un vieil homme fatigué. La seconde, Néerlandaise très terre à terre, semble peu réceptive aux splendeurs de la ville. Rena ronge son frein en pensée, avec une "amie très spéciale", Subra, inversion d'Arbus (Diane), la photographe à l'origine de sa vocation, sorte de Jiminy Cricket à qui elle confie les souvenirs de son enfance tourmentée et de ses expériences amoureuses. Rena a précisément pris l'habitude de photographier ses amants en plein acte sexuel, avec une pellicule infrarouge… Pas étonnant que ce roman intense, érudit, iconoclaste, ait incité Nancy Huston à enfoncer le clou dans son récent essai sur une nouvelle approche du féminisme, Reflets dans un oeil d'homme (Actes Sud).
