Een eigengereide heks uit een boerengat ergens in Amerika doorkruist de States samen met een even eigengereide tovenaar uit de grote stad om de wereld te redden van de nakende ondergang. Het klinkt als een klassieke fantasyroman, maar dat is het gelukkig niet. De setting is allerminst de klassieke fantasysetting en gelukkig maar, want anders was dit er een van dertien in een dozijn. M.K. Hobson slaagt er tot mijn verbazing echter in om met totaal verschillende genres zoals western, steampunk, romantiek en urban fantasy een onwaarschijnlijke mix te maken die zeer plezierig wegleest. Als debuut kan dat tellen. ( )
