The plot is funny, and intriguing as young Lulu wants a Brontosaurus for a pet, so much so, that she throws a tantrum and runs away from home. Her parents seem disenchanted with this idea and let her know that her desired pet is “much too huge and too wild to be a good pet” (Viorst, chapter 2). Lulu was not used to being told no, which was made exceptionally clear throughout the first two chapters so this set her on a path of independence. The style of writing is fun, edgy and supports the learning of new vocabulary words. The key rhyme of this book allows for a group to engage with during a read-aloud: “I’m gonna, I’m gonna, I’m gonna, gonna get A bronto-bronto-bronto Brontosarus for a pet” (Viorst). This book is one of the Notable Children’s Books in the Language Arts recipients from 2011. It would allow for a myriad of activities with children, especially fostering a dynamic open-ended discussion. The optional endings allow for the reader to choose their own path. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

The artwork is great, the story takes a different approach to the bratty kid who wants everything. Has just enough scariness (and can do attitude) that will make every kid smile. Highly recommended for those readers out of pictures books but getting into chapter books. ( )
