Funny and warm, with some science facts worked in, but be advised there is a LOT of pop humor.

I talked to a bunch of 3rd graders who read this and it cracked me up that several of them said it was boring when the author's whole motivation was to write a book that wasn't boring. I think it's because 3rd grade might be a little too mature for this. The biggest gag is that Rabbit eats his own poo (true fact!). Bear is an extraordinarily kind character who helps Rabbit even though Rabbit is sort of a jerk.

This could be a good pick for very strong readers ages 4-6 or as a read-aloud for those ages. Older kids may only enjoy it if the word "poop" still gives them the giggles. (

This is adorable and funny, with some great introductory science concepts nicely introduced, along with lessons on friendship and social acceptance.
I never gift children's books without reading them first. This goes on the approved gift list.

Today I learned that rabbits eat their own poo. Thank you for the lesson. It's quite a cute book, really, with some charming friend-making help. (

Dedicated to my daughter, Sophie. She helped me to write the story, and rewrite it, over many, many drafts. She laughed at the good bits, frowned at the bad bits, and, at one point (while I was reading her the latest version of a funny scene), burst into tears.
''What's wrong?'' I asked, rather worried.
''You've taken out ...'' she sobbed, ''...my favourite line!''
She was quite right, I realised; and so I put it back in.
(It's the line, spoken by Wolf, ''I'm sick of having my dinner run away from me at forty miles an hour.'')
