Everyone knows about Ashburn House. They whisper its old owner went mad, and restless ghosts still walk the halls. They say it's the dwelling place of something cruel and sinister. But when Adrienne?desperate and in need of a place to stay?inherits the crumbling old mansion, she only sees it as a lifeline... until darkness falls. Strange messages are etched into the walls. Furniture moves when she leaves the room. There's something here?something powerful, angry, and hell-bent on shaking things up. Worse, a grave hidden in the depths of the forest hints at a terrible, unforgivable secret. Eventually Adrienne can't ignore that a twisted thing lives in the house, its hungry eyes ever-watchful. Chasing the threads of a decades-old mystery, it isn't long before she realizes she's become prey to something deeply unnatural and intensely resentful. She has no idea how to escape. She has no idea how to survive. Only one thing is certain: Ashburn's dead are not at rest.… (meer)

A feel good haunted house book? This is a good quick read and especially suitable for anyone seeking a PG rated haunted house book. It was cute and fun but still creepy. ( )

I enjoyed this spooky haunted house tale by author, Darcy Coates. It was creepy and mysterious, but not to the point of being spooked out of my skin. Still it kept moving right along and I am giving it 5* for keeping me entertained. ( )

I thoroughly enjoyed this! We follow Adrienne (Addy) and her loyal cat Wolfgang, as they move into a large house that was left to Addy by a previously unknown relative. She has just lost her mother, and has no place else to stay. She shows up at the house unprepared for how isolated it is, she also has no money or supplies due to taking care of her mother.

I absolutely loved the characters, I especially enjoyed the cat. I liked that he played a role throughout the entire story. As a cat owner myself I cringed at the choices Addy faced trying to keep her cat and herself safe.

The story did take a while to fully develop but for me that only heightened the suspense. I would have loved to see Addy explore the house a little more, it is a huge 3 story house and we only get to go into a few rooms. I found this book eerie, suspenseful, and very hard to put down. When I wasn't reading it, I was thinking about it and was sad when it was over. Loved the ending!

As a side note: I don't want to spoil anything but this is more of a supernatural theme than a haunting / ghost story ( )

I selected this book during the final hours of a 24 hour readathon. I had the hope it would keep me reading during my hardest hours of the 24. The creepiness of the story certainly did just that. It actually became hard to put down once the readathon ended. However as I needed the sleep, I put it down. When I picked it back up to finish it, (or so I intended), a hilarious thing happened.
I woke in the early morning hours and could not get back to sleep. I decided I would read a bit in bed. The house was completely dark except for my Kindle. My dog was sleeping next to my bed. Now, you need to understand this book is very atmospheric. For me, the creep factor is high. The writing had totally drawn me in and I was transported to Ashburn House. At a part that involved a lone neglected grave and a dead looking body, (I don't want to tell you if they were or were not dead - sorry), I felt my bed suddenly start violently shaking! Being completely disorientated, I was wildly trying to figure out where I was and what was happening. The shaking stopped but my heart was racing. The shaking began again along with the doors loudly rattling and my dog freaking out at nothing I could see. Being fully awake now, I realized we were having an earthquake and the haunt of Ashburn House was not in my room. The earthquake was a 6.3 one so you can imagine how it felt. We are fine but I thought I would share that with you. I know I am not the only one who gets so drawn into a story.
I really enjoyed the story. In my opinion the build up was well timed. We were given a chance to experience Addy getting to know an old house she inherited. We became aware of something being wrong the same as she did. This is what allows us to fall so deeply into the story that we are lost in Ashburn with Addy. I do wish we had a bit more information on Marion. It would have been interesting to know her character better. The gore level was a surprise. In my experience you either get a ton of gore or none with an atmospheric book. I felt the author put the right amount of it in the story.
There is no sex in this book, the violence/gore level was appropriate for the story and there is some mild adult language for those who are interested. I would absolutely recommend this book for teens and up. I am looking forward to reading more work by Darcy Coates. ( )

Holy moly! Talk about keeping you on the edge of your seat! There were even times I scared myself thinking I could hear the noises she described. If you want a good thrill read that gives you chills, this is a must read. I didn't want to put it down. I could have read it in one sitting if I had the time, but I had to keep taking breaks from it. ( )

Huge raindrops hit Adrienne's exposed arms and face as her mother carried her out of the porch's shelter and down the groaning wooden steps.
