Bruce K. Alexander

This book presents a fascinating theory that our free-market, global economy is actually the cause of the rampant addiction in our society. He talks about all types of addiction, not just to drugs and alcohol, but to work, the internet, gaming, gambling, shopping, TV, etc. We have lost many of the social and family ties that are natural to human nature in the dog-eat-dog world of the free-market economy, the growth economy that is using up all the world's resources and destroying the planet. Bruce Alexander is a professor at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, and I can see this book being used as a textbook, but it is also very readable and his theory is very convincing. I can see the truth of it in my own experience. We need more people to read this book and take action to put the brakes on the growth economy and move towards a sustainable economy where everyone has a role to play and enormous profits are not allowed on the backs of others, with some people extremely rich just by speculation and not actual contribution to society. We need to stop the rampant consumerism encouraged by society and advertising.
