I came into this book not knowing that it was tied into a larger world, so some of the backstory took a bit to figure out. However, it was a good read with an intriguing story. I think the magic system is interesting and the mix of magic and science makes the world seem a bit more realistic to me. I am looking forward to learning more about both Max and Glen. And, who is Lucy? She participates in some of the conversations but if never mentioned in the rest of book.

To keep it simple: If you're looking for a fast-paced, easy, and enjoyable read with lovable characters, this is it. Really, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this read. The setting and plot are well-laid and the characters come to life through their interactions. For what felt like a light read, there are definitely some action-packed, edge-of-your seat scenes that had me fully immersed in the story. I have to say I was nervous about our fighter pilot character, but our "expert" character was well-done and their knowledge on the planes they fly and fix felt very real and believable. Overall, Tiffany Alexanderson does a great job balancing characters, story development (i.e pacing), descriptions, and characters together to craft a fun and intriguing story.… (meer)

I have had the pleasure of reading Stardus Over the Sekr by Tiffany Alexanderson already and I was very excited to get into another book in this universe. While the writing is just as enjoyable in 12 Past Midnight, the story isn't quite as easy-to-read - enjoyable, for sure though. There really was just a lot to keep track of while reading, from the multiple pov's to the complexity of the storyline. That being said, the story is one worth reading and then re-reading which, when it comes to books, what more can you really ask for? Looking forward to continuing to read more from this author!… (meer)

We've all had days that go on forever. And sure, sometimes we get caught in a time loop and have to iterate day in and day out until we find an escape. Most of the time, though, we're not dealing with squamous shapeless monsters from... outer space?

Tiffany Alexanderson's Twelve Past Midnight is really a worst nightmare - a generally boring day that inevitably ends in a terrible death. Set in an industrial-era fantasy world, her cast includes a traveling group of magic university students, a crew of adventurers on a job to locate a magical anomaly, a mysterious duelist with something to hide, a large dog, and a handful of other intelligent but lost folks in the deep woods of the hinterlands. They are all attracted by a meteorite falling out of the sky, but are wholly unprepared to be killed by monsters and then find themselves waking up at dawn to do it all over again. As one might expect, they are forced to learn more about each-other as they try to live through the night over and over again, and discover the secret of that falling light from the sky.

Alexanderson wrote herself a huge ensemble, and has no problem jumping between viewpoints often, sometimes multiple times a chapter (or page). Luckily, she does note whos POV we are seeing at any given moment, which is a help, and helps keep the story moving. The character's are distinct and charming, and reveal elements of the world quite naturally. This is a novel with a defined structured magic system, which is not always my bag, but the people who go for that will be pleased with with the dynamic and inventive way powers are used. I had fun with this one, and I am 100% ripping off the plot next time I run a D&D game.

Thank you to the author and LibraryThing for providing me a review copy.
