This books takes you to the village of Shenzing focusing on an outcast named Baran. Baran is tormented by the villagers, he gets stoned, pushed around and left out. Baran is entering adolescence. Suddenly his village gets terriosed by dragons, his village calls for help, a dragon warrior comes but with only one deal, he will protect the village but in his favour he has to take a village boy to accompany him on a journey...

I found this food very adventurous, most growing up books are realistic but this one has a mixture of fantasy and adventure. The characters featured in the story includes Bran the village outcast and Hajur the dragon warrior. A character situation which I found interesting was the final battle scene when Baran himself has to have a one on one gory battle with the dragon.
The author of the book is focusing on Barans thoughts and emotions. This book is a really gripping, it is not predicable and at some moments you feel like the dragon hunter yourself. 4/5.

Books plus summary: Baran is the reluctant hero in this story. An outsider in his own village of Shenzing, he is of mixed parentage, with a missing father and is shunned, teased and bullied. He has only his mother, younger sisters and the goats he tends as his companions.
Shenzing has been dragon free for so long most people believe that the dragon stories are only myths but dragons do return and cause untold destruction and death. The village must call on the legendary Dragon Warriors for protection.
In return for his help, Dragon Warrior Hajur requests a boy to train in his ways and that boy is Baran. A new life begins for Baran, where he must learn to accept himself, his fears and come to terms with past experiences and the mystery of his missing father.

After a great injustice, which resulted in his family dying, he turns to piracy and leads a fierce crew aboard the well-armed Seahawk. Capt. Graham protects Nathan, even in the face of mutiny and this proves to be a fateful decision. Nathan gets the chance to show what "he is made of "and proves himself to be a hero.… (meer)

Nathan is sailing with his father from England to South America when their ship is set upon by a renegade ex-British soldier Captain Graham who now sails the seas attacking British ships as a revenge for being wrongly imprisoned. Graham and his crew of pirates kidnap Nathan as Graham needs a cabin boy. The ship is divided by Graham's need to only attack British ships and the first mate Denning plays on this unrest, gradually calling more crew to support him in Mutiny. Nathan is caught up in all this when he sabotages the ship's attack on a British merchant. Luckily Nathan escapes with the help of an old sailor Skelton who carries an elaborate carved whalebone (scrimshaw) with him and makes Nathan promise to deliver the scrimshaw to his brother should anything happen to him. Does the srimshaw hold clues to a huge buried cache of gold or is their something else about it that makes it so valuable?
Novel very similar to the great "Treasure Island" but without the treasure!
