Yep - I'm a woman approaching a certain age (albeit vehemently in denial), and so this is the second book I've read lately on this topic to try and shed some light on what the heck should I be doing or not doing when menopause hits.

This book certainly packed a punch in terms of depth of information. There was some very useful detailed explanations of HRT versus natural solutions versus goodness knows only what. However, at times I was overloaded with information and totally bamboozled. It was as if the authors felt that they couldn't leave any medical piece of information or footnote, whereas I just needed cut to the chase and tell me what I need to know.

My main take away was that there is no hope of any NHS doctor ever taking the time to figure out the best individual solution for any individual woman (if medical intervention is required).

3.5 stars for comprehensiveness, but instead of finding the exit I'm now on my knees in the maze overburdened with information.… (meer)

The Menopause Maze covers a wide variety of topics related to women aged 40 , including such things as yoga, diet, supplements, and hormone therapies. It's highly researched and footnoted, primarily compiling results of many studies. I read it straight through, but wonder if use as a reference book would actually be more appropriate.

The book's chapters and sections give practical advice and each chapter has a valuable summary. Organization is logical and flows clearly throughout. I also appreciated the detailed timeline of hormone development, use, and controversies.

On the negative side, I had no sense of who the authors were or what qualifies them to write this book. The writing style is dry as a bone. It's very clinical - like reading the drug information from pharmacy. The book would benefit from some stories featuring real people and their experiences.
